At Canadream farm, we choose our breeding stock carefully, making sure to diversify the bloodlines of our mares. Every time we breed one of our mares we aim for two goals: producing a foal with a conformation as close to perfection as possible and a superb temperament that makes them a pleasure to work with.

Our foals are imprinted at birth and are handled extensively from the day they hit the ground. We like to show as many of our youngsters as possible in halter classes, futurities etc. as we believe the exposure to the show grounds is a very good learning experience for them. I must say that the walls of the tack room look better decorated with a few ribbons.

The fact that the Canadian Horse as been declared the “National horse of Canada” has given the breed an exceptional exposure and we, the Canadian Horse owners, will all benefit from that publicity. More people now know of this marvelous breed, and the demand all over North America will increase. We have to make sure to breed only the best quality horses, and in my mind, the best and only way to achieve this is through mandatory classification of all mares and stallions. High standards should be set in order for them to be approved as breeding stock and consequently the youngsters to be registered.

As I mentioned in the section “about us”, I bred Dutch Warmbloods for many years. They have a proven system of classification they call “keuring”. At the time of inspection, horses are rated 1st, 2nd or 3rd premium. All stallions must be 1st premium in order to be approved for breeding, and they must complete a performance testing. Mares must be 1st or 2nd premium. Implementing a system like this with the Canadian Horses would contribute to improving the consistency of the quality and the value of our horses. I realize this is a big step for Canadian Horse breeders, but if one thinks seriously about it, one would see all the benefits of breeding only the best quality mares and stallions.
